What Is Chi Nei Tsang?
Chi Nei Tsang (CNT) is a technique of abdominal massage rooted in Taoism, traditional Chinese medicine, and Thai techniques of organ massage. CNT detoxifies and tonifies the internal organs, uncovers repressed emotions, and releases structural tensions.
CNT is based on the idea that the abdomen is the center for emotions (think of having "butterflies in your stomach" when nervous or feeling sick to your stomach when worried) and that the health of our organs and the health of our emotions are deeply connected in a reciprocal relationship. CNT practitioners are extensively trained to address the abdominal organs directly with gentle, sensitive touch to stimulate and refresh the functioning of the entire body. The work is done clothed on a mat or massage table. The client lies comfortably on their back with legs supported and the belly exposed. Clients often experience a deep sense of relaxation and connection with themselves on a physical and emotional level during and sometimes for days after a session.
CNT is also useful in addressing pain and blockages in the abdomen. Symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, colitis, and Crohn’s disease can be relieved. CNT also offers post surgery treatment for scar tissue. CNT can greatly reduce and even eliminate painful menstrual cramps, shrink fibroids, relieve pain associated with endometriosis and improve fertility.
If modern Western medicine sees the human body on the level of a mechanism with individual parts that either work or don't, traditional Chinese medicine perceives it as a system of energy flows. In such a system, good health is an optimal flow of energy through the body. In the modern West, we can appreciate that the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine reminds us that we are more than simply a collection of organs, and that well-being is more than fixing things when they're "broken."
