Josh came to the practice of acupuncture and traditional medical healing systems at a rather young age. As a teenager, he spent most of his time in the world of music and art culture. This opened up a lifelong interest in creative exploration, learning, and healing.
Training to become a massage therapist sparked a larger interest in alternative medical modalities. In particular, the positive effects of both acupuncture and Ayurveda led him to pursue these two subjects further. After working as a bodyworker in various settings for a number of years, he enrolled at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico, studying with the renowned Ayurvedic physician Dr Vasant Lad (author of the definitive text on Ayurveda for Westerners). The school’s program provided a thorough education in the principles of Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle practices as well as Ayuryoga, herbology, Panchakarma, Marma therapy, and Sanskrit studies. Since graduating, Josh has continued his studies of Ayurveda with Dr. Lad, Dr. Robert Svoboda and other noted mentors. He has also dedicated himself to the study of Vedic astrology with Dr. Svoboda and others, and sees clients for these forms of healing.
Having immersed himself in Ayurveda, Josh then moved to Boulder and earned a Master of Science in Acupuncutre and Oriental Medicine (MSAOM) degree from Southwest Acupuncture College. The 3,500-hour program consisted of training in acupuncture, Chinese herbology, tui na, moxibustion, and included 1,800 clinical hours. He studied with teachers in the lineage of Master Tung, famous for his style of acupuncture for the relief of chronic and acute pain.
Josh’s primary clinical interests lie in pain management, mental and emotional health, anxiety and depression, Ayurvedic lifestyle practices, and helping people to live healthier and happier lives. He prides himself on gentle and effective acupuncture treatments and utilizes trauma-informed care (TIC) in his practice.
Initial consults last 1.5 hours and include an in-depth clinical review of your health history and primary health concerns. This is followed by an acupuncture treatment and includes a treatment plan and any necessary adjunct modalities. Follow-up visits last approximately 50 minutes to an hour and include a shorter progress check-in and an acupuncture treatment with any necessary adjunct modalities.
Josh has called Tucson home for the last twelve years. He founded and sits on the board of Common Roots Acupuncture, a non-profit 501(c)(3) clinic. In addition to seeing individual patients for Vedic astrology and Ayurveda consultations, he teaches workshops on Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine topics and is an adjunct instructor at the Arizona School of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine. In his free time, he enjoys hiking through our beautiful desert, doing yoga, checking out live music, and reading.
